Mental Illness

Mental illness affects the way you feel, think and act and can disrupt daily living. The most common types of mental illness in college students is depression and anxiety/mood disorders. These disorders can be made worse by the use of drugs and alcohol as well as social relationships.

Women in undergraduate programs are more likely than men to have major depressive or anxiety disorders. On the other hand males in undergraduate programs are at higher risk for suicide. (Hunt,2010)

How it affects us

Most high school seniors dream the sweet sweet freedom college life can bring. For some making the switch to a college class room can prove to be more challenging than expected. It can be hard to navigate and of course life can be very unpredictable. The challenges that come with leaving home and becoming an adult play a major role in their mental health.

What can we do to improve mental health

Taking care of our mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health.

Seeking help - although there is still stigmas around mental health, speaking to a trained professional and seeking treatment can reduce the effects of these disorders.

Exercise - studies have shown that the effects of exercise have a major impact on our overall well being. Even mild to moderate exercise is shown to produce benefits.

Yoga/ mediation - finding a way to be in tune with your body and mind is a great way to improve your physical strength as well as your mental strength

Self love- making sure you are a priority and ensuring that your needs are met is a great way to boost your confidence and happiness.
